Not to be confused with cubic zirconia, moissanite, or a "look-a-like" diamond, lab grown diamonds are 100% pure crystallized carbon. Think of it as making ice in your modern-day freezer versus getting it from a glacier; both are frozen H2O regardless of the origin. They are crystalizing carbon into stunning rough diamonds that are then cut, polished and graded just like earth mined diamonds.

On average, lab created diamonds are priced 20-40% less than an equivalent quality earth-mined diamond. However, just like with earth mined diamonds, prices will vary based on the diamond’s 4C’s – cut, clarity, color, and carat.

How Are Lab Diamonds Made?

Lab created diamonds are grown from the tiny carbon seeds of pre-existing diamonds. Advanced technology – either extreme pressure and heat (HPHT) or a special deposition process known as CVD – mimics the natural method of diamond formation. Some lab diamonds grown through deposition may also undergo pressure and heat treatment after they are grown.

Lab grown fancy colored diamonds are formed when small amounts of specific trace elements are present during the growth phase of the diamond, just like in nature. In both white and fancy colored lab diamonds, the exact composition of trace elements may differ from their natural diamond counterparts.

Lab diamonds can only be distinguished from natural diamonds using specialized equipment that can detect the minor differences in trace elements and crystal growth.

Lab created diamonds display the same physical, chemical, and optical characteristics as natural diamonds, along with the same fire, scintillation, and sparkle. They are real diamonds. Lab created diamonds are nearly impossible to differentiate from natural diamonds with the naked eye. Lab grown diamonds can be distinguished from natural diamonds if specialized equipment is used to test them.

Lab grown diamonds are available up to IF in clarity, D in color, Ideal in cut, with large carat weights in all shapes, including round, emerald, cushion, oval, heart, princess, trillion, and radiant.

DO ALL LAB GROWN DIAMONDS LOOK ALIKE?

No. A lot of people think they can program the process to create a specific diamond grade and carat size that are the same each time, but it can’t. They are simply putting the right conditions together but then nature takes it from there. Just like with earth-mined diamonds, there will be variances in color, clarity and carat size.
